jambatan tamparuli

The Town With A Bridge In Its Name
Tamparuli is better known for its famous suspension bridge than anything else. The town is also synonymous with the title of a local folk song- “Sumazau Jambatan Tamparuli”- jambatan meaning the “bridge” in local lingo and Sumazau the local Kadazandusun dance. Whenever the name Tamparuli is mentioned, the locals will go wild and get up to do the Congo dance for what its worth. Seriously, I am only kidding. I suppose I am now permanently barred Anyway, in my humblest opinion I think the Road Bridge running alongside the bridge hanging in mid-air is more fascinating and presenting a more technological challenge. As you can see the Road Bridge is just barely above the water level and has only a single lane. Come rainy days, the bridge is flooded & completely covered over with a few metres of water. In the old days this would mean the town folks would be cut off from the other side of the river when the flood came. Hence, the suspension bridge came into play throwing a lifeline to the local population then. I remember my brother-in-law, who used to live around this part of town, was stuck in Kota Kinabalu whenever there was flood in Tamparuli. However, this problem does not actually pose any hardship to the townfolks anymore. There is now another through road further up to get to the town. So, I think the two bridges now have two purposes- 1. act as backups 2. as a tourist attraction. Notice the muds on the bridge? The place must have been recently flooded, me think.
